Biography

Gerhard Tech received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from RWTH Aachen University of Technology, Germany, where he has been involved in medical image processing. Half of a year of his studies he was an intern with BCS electronic design, Sydney, Australia.

He joined the Heinrich Hertz Institute as Research Associate in 2008. From 2008 to 2011 he was involved in the European research project Mobile 3DTV. Since 2011 he is mainly involved in the standardization of multiview and 3D extensions of H.265/HEVC. He has contributed successfully to the standardization activities of the Joint Collaborative Team on 3D Video Coding Extension Development (JCT-3V) of ITU-T VCEG and ISO/IEC MPEG. He chairs several ad hoc groups of the JCT-3V and is appointed as editor of the Multiview Video Coding Extension of ITU-T H.265 and ISO/IEC 23008-2 (MV-HEVC), as editor of the 3D Video Coding Extension of ITU-T H.265 and ISO/IEC 23008-2 (3D-HEVC), and as coordinator of the 3D- and MV-HEVC reference software HTM.

His research interests are mainly in video and image coding and processing, including 3D representations. In particular he is interested in encoder optimization and distortion metrics for coding of depth data.
